Helping engineers helps business

The SnapEDA Team

For component suppliers, providing E-CAD and M-CAD models is a great way to support customers and make products easy-to-use. But what about things that company leaders care about most - like revenue and ROI?

We analyzed millions of E-CAD & M-CAD downloads via our platform to understand how providing resources to engineers impacts the design-in of electronic components. And we uncovered some surprising results.

The chart below shows the likelihood of an engineer to design-in an electronic component evaluated on SnapEDA. As shown, for every component evaluated, about 30% of parts get designed-in.

By designed-in, we mean that an engineer downloaded the manufacturing files for that component. The manufacturing files provide the "blueprint" an engineer needs to solder that electronic component onto their printed circuit boards. It's one of the strongest signals of design intent outside of a purchase. Our surveys show that over 80% of engineers who download the manufacturing files for a component end up purchasing the product.

Now let's jump into the exciting aspects.

As we started to dissect the data further, things got more interesting. We asked ourselves how various attributes of an electronic component might affect it getting designed-in. For example, does price affect design-ins? Does the availability of samples affect design-ins? What other factors might affect the design-in of a component?

What we found was that one of the variables that most affected design-ins was the availability of 3D (M-CAD) models for the component. Electronic components that had 3D models available saw a 30% improvement in terms of design-ins.

As our industry evolves and we welcome in newer generations, we need to adapt to their expectations for ready-to-use digital models, such as E-CAD & M-CAD models. This new generation is making component selection decisions based on the availability of technical resources, and the component suppliers who recognize this will win.

What does this tell us? Providing technical content is a great way to support customers, but it's also good for business. Providing E-CAD & M-CAD models is no longer a nice-to-have - it's a necessity.
